• Volodymir Ishchenko bei der internationalen Podiumsdebatte "Ukraine: crisis or rebirth for Europe"

Am 9. November 2022 nahm Dr. Volodymir Ishchenko bei der Diskussion "Ukraine: crisis or rebirth for Europe" im Theaterforum Kreuzberg teil, die ein Satellite-Event vom Battle of Ideas Festival war, das im Oktober in London ausgetragen wurde (Church House, Westminster). Redner: Volodymyr Ishcheko (Centre for Eastern European Studies, FU Berlin) Jakub Majmurek (Krytyka Polityczna, Warsaw) Jacob Reynolds (Academy of Ideas, London) Sascha Tamm (Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit, Berlin). • Katharina Bluhm's Vortrag bei der SCRIPTS Ringvorlesung WiSe

Am 23. Januar 2023 findet der Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Katharina Bluhm zum Thema "Russland als Pionier eines neuen illiberalen Konservatismus?" im Rahmen der Ringvorlesung des Exzellenzclusters SCRIPTS im Wintersemester 22/23 statt. Der Eintritt ist frei.

Die Ringvorlesung des Exzellenzclusters „Contestations of the Liberal Script (SCRIPTS)“ an der Freien Universität Berlin versammelt herausragende Forschung aus dem Exzellenzcluster und interdisziplinäre Perspektiven auf die aktuellen Anfechtungen der liberalen Ordnung. Sie findet im Rahmen des Programms Offener Hörsaal statt.

       

• War in Ukraine, Russia’s potential decoupling from the global internet and the changing perspective of emerging powers on internet and data governance

Russia’s war against Ukraine, the reaction of Western states, information intermediaries, such as Meta, Apple or Google, and the prospect of Russia disconnecting from the global internet have shaken the world-wide consensus on internet governance. The war demonstrated that digital and economic interdependence is a risk factor for countries that break international law and disrespect human rights. As a result, emerging powers increasingly perceive digital interdependence as a source of fragility and embrace the notion of digital sovereignty. The project aims at examining both the trajectory of Russia’s political project of internet and data sovereignty as well as the embrace of sovereigntism by some emerging powers before and due to the war in Ukraine and its repercussions. The growing popularity of the concept of internet and data sovereignty, especially in its authoritarian variant, constitutes a challenge to the liberal script inherent in the idea of global connectivity and internet governance as embodied by multistakeholder governance. At the same time, it has potential to improve representation of emerging powers’ interests in the structures of this governance.

 

• ENDURE (Mihai Varga und Soner Barthoma)

A consortium led by our institute has won a EUR 1,7 mln project from the Transatlantic Platform

ENDURE hat im Juni 2022 seine Aktivitäten angefangen. ENDURE ist ein internationales Verbundsprojekt mit dem Namen “Inequalities, Community, Resilience and New Governance Modalities in a Post-Pandemic World“. Finanziert wird dieses von der DFG (Deutschland), NSF (US), ESRC (UK), und sieben weitere nationale Forschungs-Fonds. Der leitende Forscher Mihai Varga und der Koordinator Soner Barthoma werden das Projekt mit einem Kick-off-Meeting in Berlin (9.-10.06.22) beginnen, an dem Teams aus Brasilien, Kanada, Kolumbien, Kroatien, Finnland, Polen, den USA und dem Vereinigten Königreich teilnehmen werden.

Des Weiteren hat das Endure Team erfolgreich ein Stipendium der Berlin University Alliance eingeworben, mit welchem Dr. Maria Fontolan, vom UNICAMP Brasil (in Sao Paolo), für ein Semester am OEI in Berlin hosten zu können. Maria Fontolan ist Leiterin des Cluster 4 des ENDURE Projekts.
