The Institute for Eastern European Studies is part of the Berlin-Brandenburg science location, which bundles the Eastern European expertise of the Federal Republic of Germany. (Non-)university research and policy consulting institutions such as the German Society for Eastern European Studies (DGO), the German Society for Foreign Policy (DGAP), the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) and the Centre for Literary and Cultural Research Berlin are also based in Berlin. Students have so many opportunities to attend events organised by NGOs, foundations and embassies and to make contacts. The OEI has set up its own calendar of events for this purpose.

In addition, students can take courses at universities in Berlin-Brandenburg, such as Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin or Europa-Universität Viadrina in Frankfurt an der Oder, in consultation with those responsible for the modules, and thus individually expand their profile.

The five departments of the Institute for Eastern European Studies - History, Culture, Politics, Sociology and Economics - cover regional diversity and a wide range of topics, with Russia being one of the focal points. The OEI has a library with more than 360,000 books related to Eastern Europe and, in conjunction with the library of the Department of Political and Social Sciences, the current relevant journals and newspapers.
