Institute for East European Studies - Freie Universität Berlin
The Department of Cultural Studies teaches aspects of Eastern European studies related to aesthetics, the history of knowledge and media history.
In our research projects and seminars, we explore how cultural knowledge and cultural imaginations are expressed in artistic media (especially literature, visual arts, film, theatre and performance) and what symbolic forms take shape – historically and currently – in the social practices of cultures of Eastern Europe (e.g. cultures of remembrance, protest cultures, gender cultures, cultures of work, housing cultures and cultures of communication).
Research and teaching are oriented to cultural comparison. Russian culture is our main area of focus, with comparative perspectives on the entire area of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia.
