Industrialization and Social Conflict in the Russian Empire

The twentieth century in Russia's history and the effects of the Russian Revolution of 1917 in this period are the subject of a public series of lectures in winter semester 2016/2017 at Freie Universität. Scientists from Germany and abroad first dedicate their contributions to the revolution itself and the events that precede it. In the latter part of the series they will examine the aspects of Soviet modernization and its consequences until the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s and the return of authoritarianism in the 21st century. The series of lectures will be jointly organized by the Eastern Europe Institute of the Freie Universität Berlin (OEI) and the Center for Eastern European and International Studies (ZOIS). The first lecture will be held by Prof. Theocharis Grigoriadis of Freie Universität Berlin.
Prof. Theocharis Grigoriadis is a graduate of the University of Athens, Yale University, the State University of Saint-Petersburg and the University of California to Berkeley. He is a professor of economics at the Institute for Eastern Europe, focusing on political economics, religious economics, cultural economics, comparative economic research and development economics.
The public lecture takes place in English. All events of the series are public, admission is free.
