The intensive short-term program provides students with an insight into the field of memory and identity in Eastern Europe and their impact on current political and social issues in the heterogeneous post socialist space. Different approaches and perspectives from the social sciences and humanities will be introduced and discussed between Estonian, Finnish, and German academics and students.

The sessions deal with conceptual boundaries and new insights of "Memory" and "Identity", ethnic identities and the nation-state in Post-Communist Eastern Europe, identity constructions and the media, memory discourses and identity politics, and memory and identity in the context of World War II.

Included in the program are visits to the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum and to the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Museum.

Students are expected to prepare before the start of the autumn school (literature will be available online) and to participate actively in class (group discussions, group work, presentations).

 

The Autumn School is jointly conducted by Freie Universität Berlin/Institute for East European Studies, University of Helsinki/Aleksanteri Institute, and University of Tartu/Euro College. Participants receive a certificate over 5 ECTS.

• Studies in Social Sciences, Humanities, or East European Studies

Expenditures:

There are no tuition fees. For participants from University of Helsinki and University of Tartu, there will be free accommodation in Berlin and a travel stipend (partial financing). Participants are expected to cover their living expenses during the autumn school themselves.
