Double Degree Programme with the University of Tartu

The University of Tartu and Freie Universität Berlin have offered a joint double degree program since the 2015/16 winter semester. This combines the MAs in International Relations and Regional Studies (IRRS) and in East European Studies (EES).

Upon completion of the program, students receive a double degree and two diplomas: A Master of Arts degree in International Relations and Regional Studies from the University of Tartu as well as a Master of Arts degree in East European Studies from Freie Universität Berlin.

Two students from each university are selected for the double degree program every year.

The application period starts in November and successful candidates are notified in January.

Program description

The joint program comprises 120 credits that are meant to be completed in four semesters. Courses covering a minimum of 30 credits must be completed at the University of Tartu.

The program is structured as follows:

  • Participating students enrolled in the MA in East European Studies spend the first and second semesters at Freie Universität Berlin.
  • Participating students in the MA in East European Studies spend the third semester at the University of Tartu. The University of Tartu study regulations apply during this period.
  • Students can choose whether to spend the fourth semester at the University of Tartu or at Freie Universität Berlin.

All students enrolled in the MA in East European Studies participating in the program are required to defend their master’s theses. This is mandatory in the MA in IRRS. Master’s theses should be written at the university where the student completes his/her fourth semester. Defense of the master’s thesis is mandatory for all students wishing to receive a master’s degree from the University of Tartu, irrespective of the university at which the student studied during the semester prior to graduation. Each student is assigned two master’s thesis supervisors, one from each university. Both universities recognize the grades of the joint examination board. The final diploma is issued by both universities.
