Asteris Pliakos, Professor an der Athens University of Economics and Business, wird am 24. Juni einen Gastvortrag halten. Einen kurzen Einblick in sein Thema gibt die folgende kurze Zusammenfassung.

Financial anti-crisis measures were adopted in a complex system of economic governance. The response to the crisis consisted of both decisions taken by the European Council and the Member States outside of the EU framework (European Stability Mechanism (ESM), Euro Plus Act, Fiscal Compact) as well as measures adopted by the EU Institutions (European Semester).
The varying institutional architecture leads to a differentiated integration, lack of transparency and a weaker democratic control. Whilst, Member States are still far away from a real economic and political integration, the European response to the dept crisis in the Eurozone is leading to a democratic crisis of the state, with neither the European Parliament nor national parliaments being in a position to exercise effective oversight of the institutions involved, in particular the ESM, the European Council and the “Troika”.
The lecture aims to address the democratic challenges raised by the response to crisis as well as to describe a strategy for upgrading parliamentary control at every level of the multi-tier governance in the EU in order ensure that parliaments keep up with the future developments towards a “genuine” Economic and Monetary Union.

Wir freuen uns, Sie am 24. begrüßen zu können !
