Dissertation:
In my dissertation, I take the contradictory nature of the Russian migration policy as a starting point to shed light on the relationship between migration conflicts, migration policy, and social change. I scrutinize which conflict lines prevail in post-Soviet Russia regarding immigration and ask how, under the conditions imposed by authoritarian rule, related discourses have shaped the migration policy of the last decade and the extent to which they account for its contradictory character. Building on a sociology of knowledge perspective, I approach these questions by analyzing the Russian expert discourse on “labor migration” and its translation into migration policy between 2010 and 2023. Two main analytical foci are at the center of this work. First, I examine the institutional rules of knowledge production with regards to migration policy and knowledge transfer into politics in this authoritarian regime. Second, I explore the discourses (“political rationalities”) regarding migration and interpret them in the larger social context of post-socialist change. The aim is to understand the conflicts concerning post-Soviet immigration in Russia, reveal their connection to broader issues of post-socialist change, and explore the implications for migration policy in the political context of an authoritarian regime.

Zusammen mit Laura Gorriahn: "Affektive Konstellationen und politische Effekte: Der Begriff der Willkommenskultur in der Debatte", Co-Finanzierung durch den Forschungspool des FB Politik-und Sozialwissenschaften der Freien Universität Berlin
Im Rahmen des Projekts fand der Workshop "Zwischen Willkommenskultur und Restriktion. Migrationsdiskurse im und nach dem langen Sommer der Migration" vom 30.06.-03. Juli 2020 an der FU Berlin (online) statt. Ein Teil der Ergebnisse wurde 2022 im Leviathan Sonderband "Demokratie und Migration. Konflikte um Migration und Grenzziehungen in der Demokratie" veröffentlicht.
