What do you mean by materials? - Anke Hennig & Rachel Moore: Salt and Sugar - Cinema’s Contribution to Comparative Revolutionary Studies

Das Osteuropa-Institut freut sich an dieser Stelle auf eine Veranstaltung einer ehemaligen Mitarbeiterin hinzuweisen.

A revolutionary road to cut through the impassable mountains, a revolutionary march from the Sierra Maestra, so end Mikhail Kalatozov’s legendary films, SALT FOR SVANETIA (1929) and I AM CUBA (1964). Anke Hennig and Rachel Moore will screen and introduce these revolutionary films, made by Kalatozov some thirty years apart. The event will focus on the power of materials –the need for salt in Svanetia and the excessive exploitation on Cuba’s sugar plantations. The films employ the Factographic aesthetics of Tretyakov, who wrote the script for SALT FOR SVANETIA and argued that materials have the power to cause revolutionary upheaval and renew social relations.
