Bosniaks in 1980 - 2005 – Relation between National and Religious Identity (Research Proposal)

Dženita Sarać – 2007

The goal of my research project is to point at the complexity of inter-ethnic relations, the use of symbols as well as the relations between religious and national (ethnic) identity among Bosniaks from 1980 to the present. I want to research the relations between national and religious identities, their similarities and differences. One of the key issues is that of national and religious symbols that are often confused. There are numerous examples in everyday life that testify for that (e.g., star and crescent, as religious symbols, turns into national symbols, etc.). I want to determine, through this research, to what extent these symbols have been accepted in the everyday life, and how they are perceived by “ordinary” people.
