This paper consists of two parts: the first follows the emergence of a new generation of ruling elite in
BiH by mid-1960s and the beginning of 1970s, when the debates on national status of Muslims in
BiH was intensified. The second part analyses various debates, including those at the Communist
Party fora, as well as in academic circles and in the media about the name of Bosniaks, that were
present by the end of 1960s and the beginning of 1970s.
