Berlin as Yiddish literary crossroads

Prof. Dr. Gennady Estraikh, Associate Professor of Yiddish Studies, Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies, New York University

Berlin was a place of cultural cross-fertilization, and the study will concentrate on links between the Yiddish and German intellectual circles. It would be interesting to analyze a possible influence of German-Jewish on the Yiddish writers. German and East European intellectual shared the same ideological ideas, including their support of Soviet-Jewish nation-building.

Berlin Yiddish literary circles had contacts with their colleagues who lived in many countries, most notably in Poland, Russia, France, England, Palestine, and Lithuania. Thus Yiddish periodicals published outside Germany can be used as an important source of information about events in the Berlin literary circles.
