Beginning in winter term 2015/16, the University of Tartu and the Freie Universität Berlin offer a joint MA double degree program which is based on the MA programs “International Relations and Regional Studies (IRRS)” and “Osteuropastudien (OES)”. Upon graduation the students receive a double degree and two certificates: Master of Arts in Social Sciences in “International Relations and Regional Studies” from University of Tartu and Master of Arts in “Osteuropastudien” from Freie Universität Berlin. Two students from each University are awarded for the double degree for each term of the program. Application starts in November, chosen candidates are informed in January.
The joint program consists of a study course equivalent to 120 ECTS accomplishable in a period of four semesters. A minimum of 30 ECTS is to be accomplished at the University of Tartu. The program is structured the following way:
• MA OES students participating in the program spend the 1st and 2nd semester at the Freie Universität Berlin
• MA OES students participating in the program spend the 3rd semester at the University of Tartu. During this period the study regulations of the University of Tartu apply
• The students can choose whether they would like to spend the 4th semester at University of Tartu or at Freie Universität Berlin.
All MA OES students participating in the program also have to defend their master thesis, as this is a compulsory element for all students of the IRRS MA program. Proceedings with the master's thesis will be organized at the university where a student spends the 4th semester. The defense of the thesis is a compulsory element for all the students to be awarded with a master's degree by the University of Tartu, no matter where they study prior defending the thesis. For the MA thesis, each student has two supervisors, one from each partner university. Both universities recognize the grades given by the joint evaluation panel. Graduation documents are received from both parties.
1st year master students of the MA program “Osteuropastudien” (with a focus on political science) may apply for the program. Please send 1) a letter of motivation (1 - 2 pages) and 2) a CV, both in English, to email@example.com by November 30, 2015. Applications are reviewed by the joint academic board and evaluated on the basis of motivation to study in the program. Selected candidates will be informed by the end of January 2016.
