Application deadlines

The master program East European Studies begins once a year for first-year students in the winter semester. Applications are welcome from April 24 to August 15. Applications submitted early are very welcome!

Higher semesters apply from July 01 to August 15 for the winter semester and from January 01 to February 15 for the summer semester.

Admission requirements

Information on admission can be found in the admission regulations for the master program East European Studies (in German). Requirements for the application are:

• You have a first university degree (B.A., M.A., Diplom, Staatsexamen, etc.), preferably in political science, social science, humanities, or economics (A professionally qualifying German or equivalent foreign university degree with a study portion of at least 60 credit points in one of the following - or related - disciplines: political science, sociology, economics, history, or cultural studies. If these credits are spread over several of the aforementioned disciplines, a study portion amounting to at least 40 credits must be in one of the aforementioned - or related - disciplines).
• You are fluent in English (level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)). Please note that proof of six years of schooling in English or proof of an equivalent language test for B2 level is a prerequisite for your application. Recognized equivalent qualifications are: IELTS 5.0; Cambridge Examinations: First Certificate (FCE); Advanced (CAE); Proficiency (CPE)).
• You speak German fluently (Applicants whose native language is not German and who graduated from a foreign university must demonstrate German language proficiency of at least level B2-C1 for matriculation. With DSH 2, C2 and TestDaf 4/4/4 - not older than two years - matriculation will take place. Otherwise you will be invited to take the DSH test. With the result DSH 1 you can be enrolled for a limited period of two semesters. Further information on German language skills)

Applicants who have not yet received their first degree can also be admitted (for a limited period of time). In this case, a current transcript of records must be submitted as a substitute. As a general rule, at least two thirds of the performance to be achieved in the bachelor program must have been evaluated and the topic of the Bachelor's thesis must have been issued.

Application process

The application modalities for the master program depend on whether you have obtained your first professional degree (usually a bachelor degree) in Germany.

Education nationals 

If you have obtained your first degree within Germany, apply via the online application of Freie Universität Berlin. To do so, please fill out the online application form on the application portal. All application documents must be uploaded exclusively on the portal. Further information for applications with a German university degree can be found here. 

Education Foreigners 

If you did not obtain your first degree in Germany, you must submit your application via the uni-assist applicant portal. Further information for the application with a foreign university degree can be found here. (Unfortunately, the processing of applications via uni-assist takes a long time. Application documents

Your application must include:

• the completed application form for admission to the master program East European Studies,
• the proof of previous university degrees,
• proof of English language skills at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR),
• if applicable, proof of German language skills for non-native speaker applicants.

The application documents must be submitted in full to Freie Universität Berlin's admission office by the application deadline.

Preliminary confirmation of supervision for scholarship providers

If you need a preliminary commitment of supervision for a scholarship provider (e.g. DAAD), please send the following documents to the master coordinator via e-mail or regular mail:

• Tabular curriculum vitae
• Letter of motivation for the desired course of study
• Proof of previous academic achievements

Tuituion Fees

Freie Universität Berlin does not charge tuition fees. Students pay a semester fee of currently 312,89€. You can find more information here.
